May 5 is International Day of the midwife. The Australian College of Midwives acknowledges midwives for the important work they do every day, supporting women and families through life changing experiences and providing maternal and newborn healthcare.
This year, midwives have been recognised with the planting of ‘Lucina- the midwives rose’ in The Lodge rose garden in Canberra.
‘Lucina’ joins the ‘Dame Pattie Rose’ among other significant named roses and is the first rose in the garden dedicated to a profession. It is thriving, having already produced several flushes.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said “Midwives do vital work supporting women and families.
“I’m proud to acknowledge the profession of midwifery on International Day of the Midwife and thank them for their hard work, dedication and commitment.
“I look forward to seeing ‘Lucina’ bloom in the rose garden to commemorate International Day of the Midwife in 2024 and for many years to come.”
