Prophylaxis against RhD allo-immunisation using RhD immunoglobulin substantially reduces the number of babies affected by haemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn, saving lives and preventing long term disability. The program relies on the immunisation of RhD negative donors, with a reducing donor pool. Non-invasive pre-natal testing (NIPT) of fetal genes in maternal blood can determine fetal RhD status leading to better targeted prophylaxis. This session will discuss HDFN, prophylaxis and management of immunised women. It will discuss NIPT use and limitations, and how best to implement into clinical practice.

Dr Philip Crispin is a clinical and laboratory haematologist, Clinical Director of the Blood Counts Program at Canberra Hospital, Chief Pathologist, ACT Pathology and a visiting medical officer at Eurobodalla Oncology. He is Clinical Associate Professor at the Australian National University Medical School. He is Chair of the National Blood Transfusion Committee of Red Cross LifeBlood and serves on the National Blood Authority’s Patient Blood Management Advisory Committee. He is Vice president of f the Australian and New Zealand Society of Blood Transfusion and sits on its Clinical Practice Improvement Committee. His practice includes both benign and malignant haematology, with particular interests in transfusion medicine, patient blood management and haemostasis.
