Babies with ambiguous genitalia

This webinar aims to guide the midwifery care of women and families giving birth to a baby with ambiguous / variations in their genitalia. The focus of the webinar is upon the care of these families on the day of birth and during the early postnatal period. The content has been developed in response to data collected from midwives about their educational needs and will include information about variations in sex characteristics (DSD), using inclusive language, referral processes, phenotype and common tests, clinical care and changing practices, and where to find information and resources for parents and the community.

In this webinar we will cover:
- brief description of DSD
- the types and incidence of a baby born with a variation in their sex development
- clinical care & referral pathways for individuals with DSD
- types of common tests to help to assign the sex of rearing
- inclusive language and terminology
- changes in clinical care
- current challenges
- case studies
- interview with a parent of someone born with a variation in their genitalia
- resources

Presented by:
Chloe Hanna, DSD Clinical Coordinator from the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, VIC. Chloe Hanna completed a B. Sc. Biomedical Science at the RMIT University followed by a Master of Genetic Counselling in 2014 at the University of Melbourne, completing a thesis exploring the psychosocial needs of women with DSD. Chloe previously worked in the disability sector for over 15 years. In 2016, Chloe established the role of Clinical Coordinator for individuals with variations/differences in sex development at the Royal Children's Hospital, and currently provides direct support to individuals, families and the broader community throughout Australia. Chloe's key interest is to enhance the multidisciplinary approach to DSD healthcare including psychosocial support pathways.

Dr Deborah Fox is a midwifery researcher from the Centre for Midwifery, Child and Family Health at the University of Technology Sydney, where she Coordinates the Bachelor of Midwifery degree. Her research is focused upon optimising pregnancy, birth and early parenting experiences for women and babies who experience complications and unexpected outcomes. She is a dedicated member of the ACM, currently Chair of the 2020 National Conference Planning Committee, and member of both the ACM Scientific Review Advisory Committee and NSW Branch Executive.
