Suean lives to sound things out; whether it’s an ultrasound image in the critical moment, or testing ideas to improve the teaching moment, she constantly probes every angle to get the best out of a situation.
A highly experienced sonographer, qualified educator, and award winning businesswoman, Suean’s constant sense of curiosity and desire to do things better has seen her travel the world as a sought after thought leader in the field of ultrasound education. And as a founding Director of Zedu, she gets to indulge her passion for seeing people from every medical specialty excel in developing their point-of-care ultrasound skills.
Having had her life saved thanks to ultrasound, Suean firmly believes that everyone that can use ultrasound should use ultrasound – and hopes she’ll infect you with the ultrasound bug too.
International Opportunities - Mary Richards
Mary Richards is an Australian trained Nurse and Midwife with over 40 years’ experience and expertise in midwifery. Mary has a Post Graduate in Child Health and has completed part of her Master in Public Health. Mary's particular interest is global maternal newborn and child health (MNCH) and has spent over 8 years working and training all levels of health worker in developing countries. Mary's passion is for improving MNCH for vulnerable women and their babies in remote areas where death is a common occurrence. Mary uses her many years of experience and technical expertise to train midwives in evidence based practice, life-saving skills and developing critical thinking that leads to positive changes in their clinical skills. Mary also initiated a Global Network facebook group for midwives in developing countries where she shares evidence based practice and encourages discussion and sharing of their experiences.
Midwifery Policy - Terri Barrett
Terri Barrett has been a nurse and midwife for more than 30 years working in both the public and private sector across metropolitan and rural Western Australia.
Having completed hospital based training, Terri graduated as a midwife in 1982. Over the next 20 years she worked as a clinical midwife and education facilitator before moving into midwifery management. Terri has also worked in senior safety and quality roles and is passionate about ensuring governance systems enable clinicians to provide patient centred, high quality care.
Terri has completed university studies at Masters level and has been an active member of the Australian College of Midwives both locally and nationally. She is the immediate past President of ACM.
Terri has undertaken a number of senior roles which have given her an in depth understanding of the professional issues and challenges facing midwives in all practice settings. She has been a member of several national committees and has led a number of state-wide initiatives related to maternity services over this time.
Terri is passionate about advancing the midwifery profession and looks forward to supporting the midwives of the future.
Clinical Midwife Consultant - Leonie Hewitt
Leonie works part time as a Clinical Midwife Consultant - Primary Maternity Care, at Westmead Hospital, Sydney and is currently a student (PhD candidate) at Western Sydney University. From 1986 until the late 1990’s Leonie worked in New Zealand as a neonatal intensive care educator, manager and then an independent midwife. After moving back to Australia, she was instrumental in setting up Australia’s first free standing birth centre at Ryde where she worked for 12 years. During this time, she completed a Master of Midwifery degree (MMid) and became an endorsed midwife. After leaving Ryde, she completed a Master of Research (MRes) degree in 2017 and started a PhD in late 2018. Leonie has co-authored a chapter in a midwifery textbook, has published three research papers and is currently working on the fourth. Leonie’s research focuses on the management and leadership of midwifery group practice in Australia.
Midwifery Research and Education - Dr Vanessa Scarf
Vanessa Scarf is a senior lecturer in midwifery at the University of Technology Sydney with specific expertise in place of birth research. She has recently completed her PhD which was an analysis of the cost of women in NSW according to place of birth – home, hospital and hospital labour ward. This included a detailed microanalysis of the costs of publically funded homebirths in one site in NSW. She was also a key member of the Birthplace in Australia research team and was the Project Manager for that study for over 5 years. Prior to moving to UTS, Vanessa worked as a clinical midwife in tertiary settings for over 20 years.

Going Beyond Your Job Title - Trent Ramsay
Trent is a midwifery student at Gosford Hospital with NSW Health Mid-start, due to finish in April 2022. Prior to commencing midwifery studies at University of Technology Sydney (UTS), Trent worked as a Registered Paramedic as well as a Registered Nurse in Adult and Paediatric Critical Care in both Australia and overseas. Inspired to become a midwife by the incredible women and midwives in regional and remote locations, Trent shifted his career focus. Trent is very community minded and has been involved behind the scenes and on the ground with an international health charity, Heroes Need Heroes.
