Understanding Obstetric Fistula: Women’s Experiences, Prevention, and Care
This one-hour course explores obstetric fistula, including how it develops, approaches to prevention and treatment, and the impact on women’s lives. It is designed for midwives working in, or preparing to work or volunteer in, low-resource and humanitarian settings, as well as those seeking to deepen their global health knowledge and practice.

On completion of this eLearning module, it is anticipated learners will be able to:
Explain the pathophysiology of obstetric fistulae and the circumstances in which they develop.
Identify key risk factors and system-level contributors to the development of obstetric fistulae.
Describe evidence-informed approaches to the prevention of obstetric fistulae across diverse care settings.
Outline current treatment pathways for women living with obstetric fistulae, including surgical and supportive care.
Reflect on the lived experiences of women affected by obstetric fistulae and recognise the role of compassionate, respectful midwifery care in prevention and recovery.
