Dr Brad de Vries is Head of Obstetrics and senior staff specialist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and NHMRC Early Career Fellow in the School of Public Health at the University of Sydney. He has completed a masters of medicine in clinical epidemiology and three research degrees including a PhD thesis on the prediction and prevention of caesarean section. He has led multicentre randomised controlled trials including the POP-OUT Trial of manual rotation from occiput posterior position in the second stage of labour. He has a special interest in caring for women in labour and conceived and led the formation of CWiL (www.cwil.com.au), Caring for Women in Labour which will hold its inaugural conference 10th-12th September. CWiL has equal input from midwives, obstetricians, and community members and seeks to bring all interested people together to improve the care that women receive in labour. His other interests include using modelling to predict outcomes such as caesarean section in labour and obstetric anal sphincter injury with the aim of limiting any interventions to those who are likely to benefit.
